Written and illustrated by Fr. Peregrine Fletcher, this story was crafted over 11 years of work.Ā
When the Son of the King invites everyone to the castle, a little snail sets out on his journey to the ship that will take him there. And with only three days until the ship sets sail, there isn't a moment to lose! The snail is not the only animal who undertakes this journey, all hopeful of succeeding in the difficult journey to meet the King.
Through colorful imagery and beautiful verse, this story teaches the working of the Holy Trinity through the characters of the King, the Prince, and the Dove.
One mother told us, "My kids and I loved this book! They were able to figure out that the book was about an invitation to all of us to go to heaven but that many of us, for several reasons, choose not to go. It showed the Holy Spirit always present and ready to help us in our journey here on earth."

Written and illustrated by Fr. Peregrine (who is very busy as the Master of Novoices for St. Michael's Abbey!),Ā children will be captivated by the cheerful pictures while also introducing them to a deep supernatural message.Ā Katie Warner said, "What a delightful story! Fr. Peregrine's book is a great story for kids about faith and perseverance. It is a simple story that gives meaning to faithfulness and fortitude in faith. Kids will enjoy the illustrations and the story as well as understand the meaning behind it.
"The Snail and the King" is a beautiful tale filled with lessons of humility, perseverance, and trust. Those who read this book will be drawn to not only the striking images but also to a story that reveals the Blessed Trinity's unfathomable love for each of us. Just like his other's children, "My Name is Philomena," Fr. Peregrine has illustrated and written another timeless book.
The children in our house read this book over and over again. My young readers were able to follow it on their own and cherished the times it was read to them. My older children were clearly impressed as well. This is a thorough story, with many pictures and many verses. Thank you, Fr. Peregrine, for the illustrations and extending an invitation to all readers! This will be a treasured book in our house, read for many years and to come and saved for grandchildren.
This picture book is not just for children! This wonderful story of how God loves us and cares for us is perfect for anyone of any age. If you are experiencing hard times, the bright illustrations will cheer you up, and the message of God's infinite love and mercy will give you great comfort. Highly recommend!
This book helps children discover how the Blessed Trinity works in our lives through a precious parable about a little snail whose humble heart and trust in God is an inspiration for us all on our own journeys to heaven. He endured many trials on his journey to the shore, but was comforted and strengthened by the most magnificent dove (the Holy Spirit) as he ultimately made his way to the ship that would carry him to the king where he would forever live in joy and peace. It brings tears to my eyes just describing it! My daughters 8, 6 and 4 can't get enough of this book and tell me how they want to be just like the snail. Truly, this book is a new favorite for our family!
My children and I have enjoyed reading Father Peregrine Fletcher's newest book/parable titled "The Snail and the King." Fr. Peregrine not only wrote the book, but he illustrated it as well! The book is a wonderful gift to give and a must-have for all home libraries!
Our life's goal on earth is to gain an eternal life in Heaven. While we may encounter hardships and difficulties along the way, Our Father in Heaven loves us tremendously, more than we will ever know, and gives us help along the narrow way.
Through the Catholic Church, we can receive all the graces necessary to get us to Heaven. All we have to do is trust in God, rely on Him and continue to follow Him. Despite any challenges that we may face on earth and regardless if people, even our dearest family and friends, turn their backs on us, God will always love us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) and will help us get to the Heavenly shore.
My kids and I loved this book! They were able to figure out that the book was about an invitation to all of us to go to heaven but that many of us, for several reasons, choose not to go.
It showed the Holy Spirit always present and ready to help us in our journey here on earth.
Fr. Peregrine Fletcher is a holy priest and a very talented writer and illustrator!! I absolutely love that he is using his gifts to bless families! We loved his St. Philomena book and this new one did not disappoint! I teared up as I read such a beautiful story that somehow was both a sweet animal story for children to become engaged with, yet also a deeply profound message of the importance of humility/littleness + perseverance + the aid of the Holy Spirit/grace for the journey to Heaven. Cannot recommend this book highly enough! I plan to buy it for my godchildren's birthdays this year!
I loved the book he wrote about St. Philomena and am so excited he has written another childrenās book.
This beautiful book has a powerful message for children in a way they can understand and that will keep their attention. The various animals and their opinions are a wonderful way to begin teaching children the ways others will try to interrupt our journey with the Lord and how Jesus is always watching out for us, as represented by the King and Prince.
For adults sharing this book with the children in their lives, this book is a beautiful reminder of the ways the Lord is always with us and sends many advocates our way to guide us along our journeys, if we only keep our eyes and hearts open. Regardless of the things or people that try to stop us, God is always watching out for us.
I absolutely love this story and highly recommend it for children, and honestly anyone. We can all use a reminder of the message in this book.
