Bernadette Soubirous wasn't always called the "Princess of Lourdes." In fact, this Basque girl who could barely read and write once lived with her family in an abandoned jail cell! One day during a vision of the Virgin Mary at the grotto Our Lady told Bernadette to dig in the dirt and drink the trickle of water that appeared. Bernadette faithfully followed Mary's instructions and by the next day the trickle had turned into a free-flowing spring! Not only was a chapel built there in fulfillment of Our Lady's request, but the waters at Lourdes have been a source of sanctity and miraculous healing ever since. Would you have glowed with satisfaction under the publicity that followed 18 visits from the Virgin Mary? Saint Bernadette did not. In fact, this humble soul escaped the "burden" of fame by joining the Sisters a few years later.
This lovely, serene portrait of Saint Bernadette in front of the grotto is a reminder of the peace we receive from following God's will, even in the most peculiar circumstances. The companion prayer on our Saint Bernadette Prayer Pillowcase prompts us to answer Mary's call to pray consistently, and helps us grow more humble and less self-absorbed, especially when we find ourselves "glowing" a bit too much.
